An exciting new program called a Play-A-Thon™ was officially introduced during the 2005 Awareness Campaign. It is a great program that not only provides awareness, but also provides funding for important local TSA programs. On top of that - IT IS FUN!! Parents and grandparents, if you want to take your child or grandchild to a fun activity - this is it!
Play-A-Thon is a concept designed by Hasbro to empower children by offering them a chance to raise money for a charity of their choice by doing what they do best...playing! The concept behind the Play-A-Thon is similar to a walk-a-thon, children gather sponsors for every hour they play with any toy, game or participate in any activity. The event usually takes place during the course of one afternoon for about four hours and consists of various play stations with age-appropriate toys for different age groups.
TSA Rhode Island held a first-time Play-A-Thon during Awareness 2004 in conjunction with the Pawtucket Boys & Girls Club to a limited audience and raised over $1,600, which was split evenly between the two organizations. A trial Play-A-Thon was also held during 2004's Youth Program at the National Conference and was a great success, raising over $800 for an hour and fifteen minutes of play time. The money raised was donated back to the participating TSA chapters.
Our goal is to have as many Play-A-Thon events happening among TSA chapters and support groups across the country during Awareness month (May 15 - June 15) as possible.
Many of our chapters and support groups will be participating. If there is not a scheduled Play-A-Thon planned near you, contact your local chapter or Sandra Holland at national TSA at sandra.holland@tsa-usa.org and someone will assist you in setting one up. This can be a neighborhood afternoon project or a great way to celebrate something or nothing. Have a Play-A-Thon party just for the fun of it!
